The Elyria Catholic Boys Basketball team hosted Fairview Park High School in the Coliseum at Elyria Catholic on December 3rd, 2011. Despite losing their first game of the season, the Panthers chose to persevere, and not disappoint the home crowd winning 68-42 over Fairview.
EC opened up the match on a 20-0 run which lasted until 3:17 left in the 1st quarter. "We got off to a great start with that 20-0 lead, we needed that." Coach Kuchta had to say after the home opener, "I wasn't sure how long our energy would last, because we spent a lot of energy last night." The Panthers were red hot from the free throw line starting out 5-5. Senior Andrew Konno hit all of his three point attempts in the 1st quarter, eventually missing only one three point shot the rest of the night. "When (Konno) gets hot we try to give him the ball. He showed us during the summer, he works hard, he's a great kid, I love his leadership." Kuchta had to say about the senior guard. "It was nice to see him hit a couple shots, and feel good about it. Because when he gets hot, he usually hits three or four in a row." EC finished out the 1st half on top 41-23.
The Panthers came out after the 1st half and took advantage of the paint with their height. "We knew that with so much energy spent from last night (against Lakewood), I didn't think we were going to shoot that well, and we wanted to pound the ball and crash the boards tonight. I feel like we did a good job of that." Kuchta had to say. The Panthers also worked on cutting the turnovers they had last night, which they did by more than half. "One of the things we talk about before every game, is twelve or fewer turnovers in order to have a great chance to win." Coach Kuchta stated. Leading the Panthers in points the second half was John Stursa with 8 points.
EC is now 1-1 on the season (0-0 in WSC). The Panthers travel out to Firelands High School to play the Falcons
