The Elyria Catholic Varsity Boys Basketball team hosted Open Door in a charity basketball game, in which all profits were donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Cleveland, Ohio. Not only was this for a good cause, but the EC community got a little preview of what to expect from the Panthers this year.
Elyria Catholic finished out the first quarter with a bang, ending the quarter with a 20-6 lead over Open Door. The Panthers finished 5-8 from the free throw line, and only limited themselves to four turnovers. The second quarter was not much different from the first, with EC going into the locker room at half with a 36-10 lead over Open Door. "We did want to pound (the ball) inside, and get the ball to Jeremy (Holley) and whoever was in the post," Coach Kuchta had to say after the scrimmage. "We did a good job of a doing that at times."
Coming out of the half, the Panthers continued to play as they did the first half, pounding the ball inside, and using their height as an advantage to score points, and draw fouls. The Panthers drew seven fouls alone in the third quarter itself. EC finished out the third quarter hitting 13 out of 19 freethrows, and only two turnovers.
The fourth quarter finished with a Elyria Catholic victory over Open Door 79-29. EC had hit 19 of 26 free throws (78%). "75% to 80% is our goal for about each game. That's probably our best in awhile." Coach Kuchta says. EC also had every member on the roster score at least a basket, and using that word that wins games, teamwork. "That's really one thing we're striving for this year, being more of a team, and feeling like we don't have many stars, or prima donnas on the team." Coach Kuchta states, "We're looking for team play, and making sure we're not selfish (on the court). So we took a great step tonight at achieving that goal."
