Elyria Catholic faced WSC foe Rocky River in an important match-up for both teams at this juncture. Elyria Catholic already being on a two game losing streak, came out struggling on both offensive and defensively against the Rocky River shooting game. The Pirates would end this rowdy match-up beating EC 58-33.
The first quarter has not been at its finest for the Panthers these past few games, and it was the same story tonight. Rocky River kept EC to only five points at the end of the first quarter, and the Pirates got around the Panther defense scoring fourteen. The second quarter was not much different for Elyria Catholic, not being able to buy a shot, and struggling defensively. Rocky River found its way around the Panther 2-3 zone, shooting 4-8 (50%) from the 3-point line in the first half. Rocky River scored fourteen more in the second quarter, going into the half on top 28-13 over EC. 6'5" Sophomore Jeremy Holley led EC in points with five, and four rebounds. John Stursa pitched in with four.
The second half got more physical then your typical basketball game. Rocky River still continued to play great defense shutting down the EC offense limiting Holley to only seven points, as well as Stursa. Rocky River stayed consistent, hitting 7-15 of their shots, and going 2-3 from the three point line. The second half got a little psychotic when EC finished out the game with four technical fouls, along with Rocky River catching one. The Pirates handed EC their fourth loss, and second in the WSC conference.
Stats:
Jeremy Holley - 7 PTS, 5 RBS
Tyler Riddell - 2 PTS
Danny Whitacre - 4 PTS, 3 RBS
John Stursa - 7 PTS,
Matt Morgan - 4 PTS,
Xavier Bennett - 4 PTS
Cory Strasko - 4 PTS
The Elyria Catholic JV Boys suffered the same fate as the Varsity players losing to the JV Pirates 48-26. Jake Dempsey stepped up big time to help his team having 11 points, and 8 rebounds.
Double The EC At Rocky River High:
The EC Boys Basketball teams wasn't the only team in the Rocky River High School building, as the Boys & Girls EC Swimming teams swam just down the hall from the River gymnasium against Avon High School. Both the Boys & Girls swimming teams beat Avon in this WSC match-up. For more information, visit www.ecswimteam.com
