FALL PRESEASON "SHARPEN YOUR SKILLS" A BIG HIT WITH YOUNG HOOPSTERS IN LORAIN COUNTY

Elyria Catholic Boys basketball coach Phil Kuchta ran his 2nd annual boys/girls preseason skills camp this week at the EC coliseum.  The camp turned out to be a huge success once again with about 56 campers coming out to "sharpen their skills" before the upcoming season.  "I really feel like this is a great way to get the season started because it gives the young boys and girls an opportunity to get in the gym and get a ball in their hands".  The population of campers came from all over the county with boys and girls coming from Elyria, Lorain, Avon, Vermillion, LaGrange, Sheffield, North Ridgeville, Grafton, and North Olmsted.
This camp is very unique for area campers because there is no other camp like this in the county in pre-season.  "To my knowledge, this is the only pre-season camp being conducted by any high school in the county" said Coach K.  This year the campers were treated to a special visit from former local Avon standout Steve Vega (Lorain County Mr. Basketball)  and former Elyria Star lady hoopster Jessy Verhoff (Bendik) who was Miss Lorain County Basketball.  Both individuals showed some drills and talked about things that made them successful during their career.  "I prided myself in being the hardest worker every single day" said Steve Vega.  Jessy Bendik talked about how she always believed in herself, "I tried to stay focus and no matter what people said, I focused on my goals and believed that I could achieve them".  Both Guests gave some valuable pointers to help the young campers.
The camp was directed by Boys Coach Phil Kuchta with the support of EC girls coach and Alumni Eric Rothgery and staff and the rest of the boys staff, and members of the current EC boys/girls basketball program.  The camp focused on basic skills such as passing, shooting, ballhandling.
